In the biggest rebranding operation of the current decade Facebook changed to Meta. If you are to go by Zuckerberg, then Meta is the next big thing but there is more behind this story.
Starting with the Cambridge Analytica expose things have looked shaky for Facebook. Trampled by a series of congressional hearings, damning reports, and whistle-blowers. The Facebook name had become synonymous with controversy
Things were so bad that one could nickname their over investigative life partner as Facebook. If Facebook was to live, its rebirth was necessary.
Here are 7 objectives this rebranding operation will try to fulfil
1. Restoring Brand Trust
The allegations of meddling in elections, user privacy violations and employee harassment had left holes in the white and blue of Facebook. The “F” in the logo looked haunted. The rebrand cleared the name of Facebook and with it all the negative brand associations.
2. Let's face it Facebook was old and boring
The Atlantic published an article labelling Facebook as “boring”. With changing tastes in social consumerism, Facebook was losing its face, the rebrand brought with it the whole new idea of Metaverse. Throwing around words like metaverse is a good way of getting back the Gen Z audience.
3. Those NFTs are too good to miss
With the cryptos catching speed, calling yourself meta or metaverse puts you right among thick things. The metaverse, like social media, is the new frontier for connecting people. However, virtual and augmented reality can be used to connect people and explore the Metaverse. People will be able to interact, learn, collaborate, and play in ways that we cannot even imagine. By doing so, Metaverse will be able to bring more people together and create a new future for this world. People will be able to connect more socially in the metaverse than they do now through social media.
4. Fixing the punctured Revenue numbers
Facebook was dying a slow death. Facebook made a profit of $20 billion in 2020 alone, but 97 percent of the company's revenue originates from advertisements. And, to keep the company profitable, Mark Zuckerberg shifted the company's focus towards Virtual and Augmented Reality. However, Meta's new focus is on the Virtual world, which is an untapped market and opens up a new opportunity for the company to make more profit.
5.Taking Over the Virtual World
There is currently no big company in the market that is solely focused on Virtual Worldbuilding. This VR technology has the potential to be the most profitable business to come in history. Meta, along with other major corporations such as Apple, Microsoft, Valve, and Niantic, is developing technology that will shape the virtual world entirely. Metaverse is steadily constructing Web 3.0, the next evolution of the internet.
We can all agree that metaverse sounds awesome and even more so when Facebook needed a new name. It's got so many bells and whistles that we can call it genius on Facebook. However, if the old values don't change, the new name won’t do anyone any good.
